Diane will be discussing the History of Geometric beaded shapes and the Johnson solids.  There are exactly 92 Johnson Solid shapes first listed by Norman Johnson in 1966. They’re numbered as J1 through J92, each with its own name. Although there are 92 different shapes they’re all combinations of triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, octagons or decagons.
Diane put together a Facebook group in 2020 as a call to beaders from all over the world to volunteer their time making one of these 92 shapes.  When they were all completed Diane strung them together for display.  She's also put together a book showing each completed shape along with its flat pattern. 

The shapes Diane will discuss are exciting to bead workers because they open the door to myriad new and exciting possibilities. Not only can these be used as unique beaded beads and surprising pendants, they can be made into vessels, boxes with lids, stellated shapes (like 3D stars), ornaments, Cellini shapes and patterns of all types. These basic flat shapes can also be warped like the warped square which has been so popular lately. British beaders were so intrigued by this project that they have nearly completed their own collection of these shapes. You will also be able to see a variety of color palettes that you can use in your own work.
 
Several members of the UMBS joined beaders from 17 countries for this world-wide challenge: Sonya Monzel, Liana Magee, Judith Krzyzek, Roberta Sorenson and Barb Knoche.

Gail McMillan of Hart Strings will be teaching at our
Saturday June 19th Beading Basics Live from 1-4pm CST
Join us in making Gail's "Chakra Bracelets + Earrings"

Gail started beading in 2011 by making eye glass "leashes" out of shells she collected in Florida.  She joined Adele Kimpel's beading group, "The Bead Club" and met weekly with many beady friends.  When Covid hit last year their group began using Zoom for their meetings and have continued having a great time!  She's also taken classes at Lotus Beads, Taylors Falls Bead Store,  Beadville USA, the Twin Cities Bead Bazaar and many UMBS bead retreats.
In order to make more room in her home for the finished jewelry she was accumulating Gail began selling her wares at the Excelsior Farmer's Market, the Minnetonka Farmer's Market, the Carver County Art Wander as well as many private boutiques and home sales.
Gail says "Creating jewelry has certainly kept me sane during the past year!  I can't wait to get back to live bead sales so I can touch, feel and see all those beautiful gems waiting for me out there!!"

Gail will be teaching "Chakra Bracelet Two Ways (X2) + Chakra Earrings".

Bracelets (6 1/2" to 7" size)
Elastic Version
14-16 -- 8mm Black lava, onxy or other beads
1 each -- 8mm beads in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
2 -- 8mm large hole silver beads
12" -- Stretch Magic elastic .8mm
Super New Glue or E6000 or Loctite Super Glue

Wire Version
12" Soft Flex medium wire
2 crimp beads
2 crimp covers
1 clasp of your choice
4 jump rings

Earrings
10 -- 4mm crystal or silver beads
1 each -- 4mm red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet crystals or beads
2 -- silver plate head pins
2 -- 20mm silver plated brass hoop frames
2 -- silver plate ear wires
